But before that, a small synopsis on what is JEE-Main for the newbie’s (I know most of you know it!).

What is JEE-Main:
JEE-Main is the national level engineering entrance exams for centrally funded technical institutes such as NIT, IIIT etc.  It is also the stepping stone for IITs as you have to clear JEE Main first and also be within the top 1.5 lakh students to appear in JEE Advanced, the entrance exam for IITs.

Prior to the year 2013, there were two main national level engineering entrance exams:
1.0 IIT-JEE conducted by IITs: for admissions to IITs (and also IISER, RGIPT etc.)
2.0 AIEEE conducted by CBSE: for admissions to NIT (and also IIIT, DTU etc.).

From 2013 onward, JEE Main has replaced AIEEE & JEE (Advanced) has replaced IIT-JEE.
In addition:
1.0 Class-XII Board exam marks are also used to prepare the merit list for JEE Main. Weightage of Class-XII Board exam marks is 40% while that of JEE Main is 60%.
2.0 In above merit list, you have to be within top 1.5 lakh rank to be able to appear in JEE (Advanced). In other words, JEE Main has become the qualifying exam for JEE (Advanced).
